What is IVF?

*The term In vitro fertilisation, IVF refers to the process where a woman’s eggs are fertilised outside of her body in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred back into the uterus a few days later.

When IVF Might Be An Option ?

* Some of the types of fertility that might be helped with IVF include:
- Absent fallopian tubes or tubal disease.
- Endometriosis
- A male factor contributing to infertility, in which sperm counts or motility are low but there are enough active sperm to allow fertilisation in the laboratory. It can be used in combination with ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) in cases of severe male factor infertility. Severe male factor in which sperm must be obtained surgically in combination with ICSI.
- Unexplained infertility
- Infertility secondary to sperm antibodies
- In cases where IVF is considered to be the best treatment option for the couple different circumstances.

* A case when the uterus is removed (hysterectomy)
* Cases where the endometrium is surgically removed
*Cases who had tuberculosis in uterus
*If the ovarian reserve has finished, where no more oocytes (eggs) are available
*Cases where ICSI is indicated

What does IVF involve?

* There are four general steps involved in an IVF cycle:
* Stimulation of the ovaries to encourage development and maturation of the eggs.
*Retrieval of the eggs.
*Fertilisation of the eggs and culture of the embryos.
*Transfer of the embryos back into the uterus.

What are the factors that affect IVF success?

There are many factors that affect the IVF success:
*The female partners age
* The male partner age (that is new!)
* years of infertility
* if previous pregnancy has happened
* number of oocytes obtained during the IVF cycle
* if the couple are stringently adherent to the doctors instructions
* The center where IVF were performed

Why the difference in success rates in-between IVF centers?

Yes, There is worldwide variation in success rates in-between IVF centres. Here is some of the factors that affect success rates due to centre characteristics:-

* Are the preparations before attempting the IVF trial have addressed all the couple specific issues, as very couple have their own medical “particulars”
* Have the preparations included all the “necessary” investigations
* Is the ovarian stimulation protocol being “patient tailored” or “routine” stimulation
* Has the semen being investigated thoroughly and the characteristics being addressed
*IVF laboratory capabilities from the availability to handle different degrees of semen characteristics in processing to sperm selection techniques such as IMSI, PICSI and others, egg handling, culture methods and capabilities such as culturing embryos to day 5/6 and so on
