Overview
In vitro fertilization (IVF) involves fertilization outside the body
in an artificial environment. This procedure was first used for
infertility in humans in 1977 at Bourne Hall in Cambridge, England.
To date, hundreds of thousands of babies have been delivered
worldwide as a result of IVF treatment. Over the years, the
procedures to achieve IVF pregnancy have become increasingly
simpler, safer and more successful.
Nowadays, IVF is considered a way of medical supervision and
correction of problems for the initial stages of achieving and
maintaining pregnancy. The steps involved diagnose and treat most of
the problems that might have caused the initial problem, and this is
not available to any other form of fertility treatment. IVF/ICSI is
probably one of the most efficient forms of fertility treatment, in
that it usually provides for the highest rates of successful
conception for any one treatment cycle.

What is IVF?
The term In vitro fertilisation, IVF refers to the process where a
woman’s eggs are fertilised outside of her body in the laboratory.
The resulting embryos are then transferred back into the uterus a
few days later.
When IVF Might Be An Option ?
Some of the types of fertility that might be helped with IVF
include:
* Absent fallopian tubes or tubal disease that cannot be treated
successfully by surgery, or not feasible to do as if the wife’s age
is over 34.
* Endometriosis that has not responded to surgical or medical
treatment.
*A male factor contributing to infertility, in which sperm counts or
motility are low but there are enough active sperm to allow
fertilization in the laboratory. It can be used in combination with
ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) in cases of severe male
factor infertility.
* Severe male factor in which sperm must be obtained surgically in
combination with ICSI.
* Unexplained infertility that has not responded to other treatments
* Infertility secondary to sperm antibodies
* In cases where IVF is considered to be the best treatment option
for the couple different circumstances.
What does IVF involve?
There are four general steps involved in an IVF cycle:
• Stimulation of the ovaries to encourage development and maturation
of the eggs.
• Retrieval of the eggs
• Fertilisation of the eggs and culture of the embryos
• Transfer of the embryos back into the uterus
IVF/ICSI steps are described more fully in
IVF/ICSI process:
How successful is IVF?
Chances of success vary between patients, particularly according to
the age of the woman, but on average about 54% of patients will have
a baby after one attempt at standard IVF.
